The indie music scene welcomes a fresh voice with the release of Meg van Wyk’s debut EP, “Trousseau.” As an independent singer-songwriter, Meg van Wyk embodies the spirit of alternative pop and folk, weaving her unique sound into the fabric of today’s music landscape. The EP, consisting of a meticulously curated collection of songs, will be available on all major streaming platforms from 15 April 2024.
“Trousseau” is a deeply personal project for Meg, and is a labour of love dedicated to her late husband. The title of the EP reflects her journey through the intricacies of life, love, and self-discovery. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Damien Rice, Suzanne Vega, and Lianne la Havas, she crafts her narrative with a raw, emotive edge that resonates with listeners. The EP’s lead single, ‘Burn Down’, is a testament to Meg’s storytelling prowess, combining haunting melodies with succinct poetic lyrics that explore the dynamics of attraction and infatuation as a dance between two individuals akin to flames flirting with one another. Meg explains the choice of title: “A trousseau is a kist in which a bride gathers items which she will take into her new life with her chosen partner and I felt like each one of these songs signified an important moment in my relationship with my late husband. Although he is no longer with me, I carry the love and the joy we shared with me always”.
Meg will be hosting a listening party on Monday, 15 April 2024 at M-Pire Music at 299 Albert Road, Woodstock where listeners will be regaled with tales about love and loss in-between hearing the new tracks for the first time. The singer will also facilitate a ritual as a means for audience members to honour their grief. The event coincides with Meg’s 7th wedding anniversary, and attendees are encouraged to pack a picnic basket to enjoy throughout the evening. Tickets are R150 online and R200 at the door and can be purchased on Quicket at the following link. Doors open at 6:30pm and show starts at 8pm.
Other performances in April include a solo acoustic gig as part of the inaugural Love Life Festival in McGregor on Friday, 26 April 2024 at The Blend, 46 Voortrekker St. Tickets are R150 and can be booked on Quicket here.
Fans and new listeners alike are encouraged to explore “Trousseau” and join Meg van Wyk on her musical journey. For more information, follow Meg on her social media platforms and stay tuned for upcoming performances and releases.
